Capstone: End-to-End Deep Learning Project
A self-directed capstone proves you can integrate every prior skill into a real, evaluated deliverable.
Learn it
Choose a problem (image classification, text classification, or a tabular task) and build a complete pipeline: baseline, transfer learning or a transformer, regularization, and honest evaluation. Use a Kaggle dataset/competition to get real data and a leaderboard for grounding.
By the end you’ll be able to
- Frame a real problem and assemble a suitable dataset
- Design, train, regularize, and evaluate a deep model

Practice
Iterate at least three modeling experiments (baseline, regularized, transfer/fine-tuned), logging metrics for each and choosing the best on a held-out set.
Build it — your output
A documented repo or notebook with a trained model, an evaluation report, and a write-up of your experiments.
Prove it — check yourself
You’re ready to move on when you can honestly say yes to each:
- Did you establish a baseline before adding complexity?
- Can you justify your final architecture and regularization choices with metrics?
- Is your evaluation on truly held-out data, free of leakage?
Do it with AI
Use a free AI tool as your tutor and pair-programmer. Copy a prompt below into Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini (for building, try Cursor or Copilot).
The habit: Try it yourself first — a little struggle is where the learning actually happens. Then ask for a hint before the answer — never copy blindly.
