Text Preprocessing & Tokenization
Every NLP model is only as good as the tokens you feed it, so clean, consistent text prep is the foundation of the whole pipeline.
Learn it
Text preprocessing turns messy strings into normalized token sequences. You will learn tokenization (splitting text into words/subwords/sentences), normalization (case, punctuation, stopwords), and morphological reduction via stemming and lemmatization. spaCy and NLTK expose these as composable steps.
By the end you’ll be able to
- Clean raw text (lowercasing, punctuation, stopwords) reproducibly
- Tokenize into words and sentences; understand stemming vs. lemmatization

Practice
Take a raw dataset of product reviews and write a function that lowercases, strips punctuation, removes stopwords, and lemmatizes, returning a clean token list per document.
Build it — your output
A reusable Python preprocessing module (clean_text + tokenize) with a before/after demo on 20 sample documents.
Prove it — check yourself
You’re ready to move on when you can honestly say yes to each:
- Explain when lemmatization is preferable to stemming
- Tokenize a paragraph into sentences and then words correctly
- Justify which normalization steps you kept or dropped and why
Do it with AI
Use a free AI tool as your tutor and pair-programmer. Copy a prompt below into Claude, ChatGPT, or Gemini (for building, try Cursor or Copilot).
The habit: Try it yourself first — a little struggle is where the learning actually happens. Then ask for a hint before the answer — never copy blindly.
